GPS marine software is an important tool for marine GPS receivers. This software is required in order to update routes, maps and waypoints for the receiver on your PC.
Without this software, your GPS unit would only be able to use the maps and routes pre-installed and configured within the GPS device, which would severely limit the functionality of the unit.
While there are independent GPS waypoint tracking software that can be used, a good program should have this functionality included so that you can get the most benefit from the software without having to use multiple programs.
However, simply having functioning GPS marine software is not enough. In order to be able to make good use of it, you will need to update your map sources on your PC. This involves doing one of several things.
First, you can contact the manufacturer of your GPS unit. The manufacturer will have a library of resources available for your download.
Second, you can choose to purchase a collection of maps on CD from a private vendor.
Your final option is to copy data from a friends computer. This final option, while feasible, is not suggested. The first two options will ensure that you have a wide range of modern maps that you can use with your unit. The model of your unit, and the software used to access the maps are both taken into consideration when you purchase the map data. This helps prevent wasting time and allows you to begin full use of your GPS unit immediately.
