GPS Marine Maps for use in Marine and Multi-function GPS systems

By Rebecca Blain

Having accurate and up to date GPS marine maps is very important if you want to be able to chart your course properly, as well as keep proper waypoints in memory on the system.

There are a variety of different GPS receivers that are compatible with marine maps, ranging from models manufactured by Garmin, Navman and Magellan.

Before you download or purchase a CD with the maps, you should take the time to investigate which style of maps are compatible with your unit. This will prevent you from accidentally spending money on maps that you can not use.

In addition to this, you will want to make certain that the software you use to calculate destinations, note waypoints and keep records is fully compatible with the maps you want to associate with your saved route.

Once you have confirmed you can use the GPS marine maps you are considering investing in, you will need to download and install them to your PC prior to transferring them to your GPS receiver. Doing this accomplishes several things.

First, it permits you to confirm that the maps work. If they work with compatible programs on your computer, they will most likely work on your GPS receivers without difficulty.

Second, doing this permits you to update your current routes and waypoints and download them to your GPS device. As long as you take the time to be diligent and keep your maps updated, you should be able to go on the water fully confident that you have correct data in your GPS unit.
