Acquiring Mapsources for GPS Navman devices

By Rebecca Blain

Acquiring Mapsources for GPS Navman devices is a tricky prospect for those who have never owned a GPS device before.

While the units come with a decent array of maps for many areas, some of the maps are lacking details on local side streets and waypoints.

On account of this, you will want to update your mapsource through either Navman, or through an independent vendor.

When you are searching for your mapsources, there are several things that you want to keep in mind.

First, you want to know the type of unit you have. The Navman 630, for example, will have a completely different mapsource kit than then Navman G-Pilot. Before you download or purchase, you will want to confirm that your GPS unit can handle the type of maps that you are looking at.

Once you have confirmed the Mapsources for GPS Navman devices you have found fit your needs, you will need to download them to your computer.

Most mapsources will come in either a CD format or as a downloadable file off of the Internet. As Navman devices do not include neither CD nor Internet capabilities, you will need to transfer the files from your computer to your GPS device through a cable. Most Navman devices come with the cable required to do this.

Before you load the maps into your device, you will want to ensure that they are ready for use. The GPS devices only know how to use specific types of files. If your maps come in an archive, you will need to remove the maps from the archive before downloading to your GPS unit or flash memory unit.
